Man killed in Gardena freeway collision; Traffic collision injures one

An accident that occurred on Monday, January 19 on the Gardena freeway in Carson, which saw a minivan collide with a car, resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man who has been identified as Matthew Hellums.

According to a report by MyNewsLA, “The crash was reported at 12:38 a.m. Monday on the westbound Gardena Freeway just west of Central Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. Both vehicles were blocking the HOV lane, the CHP said.”

It was the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office that identified the victim, and Hellums was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The report adds that, “A news videographer who went to the scene said one injured person was taken to a hospital. The CHP issued a SigAlert shutting down the westbound HOV lane and lanes 1, 2 and 3. The lanes were reopened at 4:18 a.m.”

A traffic collision involving a car colliding with several parked vehicles on Jan. 24 has left one male victim in critical condition at a local hospital, Gardena police said in a press release.

GPD officers responded to a traffic collision at 1:57 a.m. Saturday, involving a Chevrolet Camaro hitting several parked vehicles on Van Ness Avenue, between 132nd Street and 134th Place, Traffic Bureau Lt. Matt Hassoldt said in the release.

Upon arrival, GPD officers found an “unresponsive male in the roadway,” Hassoldt said. “Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived and transported the injured male, who remains in critical condition, to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center [near Torrance].
