Basketball registration for youth born in the years 2001 to 2012 can take part in a city of Gardena-sponsored basketball league from Jan. 5 to Feb. 4 at Rush Gym and Rowley Park gymnasiums. Cost is $60 for Gardena residents and $70 for non-residents. Applicants must bring a registration form, birth certificate, utility bill and payment to any of the City parks and facilities: Bell Park, Freeman Park, Fukai Park, Johnson Park, Nakaoka Community Center, Rowley Park, and Thornburg Park. Registration will include a jersey.
There will be five age divisions: Rookie (birth years 2011-2013), bantam (2009-2010), pee wee (2007-2008), midget (2005-2006) and Junior (2002-2004). Call 310-217-9537.
Regular registration is $45 for Gardena residents and $55 for non-residents, from Jan. 7 to Feb. 11, and includes jersey and trophy. Registration can be completed at any City park or at the Nakaoka Community Center.
Age divisions are Rookie (2011-2013 — child must be age 5 by March 1, 2019), Minors (2010-2011), Majors (2006-2009), and Juniors (2006-2007). Rookie division only is coed. Call 310-217-9537
The Gardena Valley Lion’s Club will present its 37th Community Recognition Luncheon and 94th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday Jan. 26 at the Holiday Inn L.A. Gateway Hotel,19800 S. Vermont Ave., Torrance.
It is not too early to reserve a seat for the event, Lion members said. Social Hour starts at 11:30 a.m., with a no-host bar; 12:30: Luncheon and Lions program will follow. Gardena will usher in Black History Month with its annual Afternoon in the Park celebration at Rowley Park Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
The celebration will feature several food trucks, retail booths, a kids area, and resource booths. The event will also feature the presence of the Instagram Chefs allowing patrons to sample the food that made them social media mainstays.
New at this year’s event will be a college fair where interested patrons can gather admissions information from all of the featured colleges in attendance. A fee application raffle will be held.

The Day of Remembrance event is planned for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute’s main hall, 1964 W. 162nd St., Gardena.
This annual event commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066, which saw the mass removal and imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Call 310-324-6611.
