Dancer-poet Nakano to read haibun, tanka at JCI

All-around artist Genie Nakano presents a night of poetry and dance performance while reading haibun and Tanka from her book, “Enter the Stream,” from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 in the Nisei Veterans Memorial Hall at the Gardena Valley JCI, 1964 W. 162nd St., Gardena.

This event is more than just a book reading, and will include various forms of music and performance that brings her poetry to life.  There is no charge to guests and light refreshments will be served.

Nakano is a third generation Japanese American born in East Los Angeles. She is the author of the upcoming collection, Storyteller, and has published her poetry in such journals as Atlas Poetica and Ribbons.

In addition to being a writer, she is also a yoga/meditation instructor, and has an MFA in Dance from UCLA.  She was a columnist for the Gardena Valley News for many years, and currently has her poetry section, Genie’s Lamp, in the Rafu Shimpo. She experiments with movement, music, dance, and poetry at spoken word events. Nakano teaches Gentle Yoga and tanka at the Gardena Valley JCI.

Haibun poetry from her first book “Enter the Stream” will be the thematic material from which she tells her stories of a sansei’s journey in life.

Through prose and haiku, Genie’s exquisite use of metaphors and imagery, sketch life with humor and tears. All are invited  to an afternoon of poetry, music, and movement.
