With 22 locations spread over California, 13 of them in the Los Angeles area, Tender Greens is a chain but it’s a local one and it’s well worthy of our attention.
“Two chefs and a foodie set out to change the way people eat for the better,” they say online. “Our inspiration? The meals we had when our friends came over. The food. The pairings. The exploration. The energy. And the promise that on any given day we’d eat or drink something we wouldn’t find anywhere else. So we opened Tender Greens in 2006 and started a food revolution. Welcome to our kitchen.”
Tender Greens serves sandwiches and salads, all of which look appetizingly fresh. They also serve exciting bowls such as Bolognese Pasta and Thai with Grilled Shrimp or Steak.
“We start with the best ingredients, cook from the heart and let our food do the talking,” they say. “No compromises, no matter what. Sustainability is at the core of all the choices we make, from our food to our planet to the future of farming. It’s in our DNA. After all, we’re chefs.”
Their attention to detail is particularly apparent when enjoying Tender Greens’ plates. The diner picks a protein, a green, and a side. All of the plates come with a slice of hot, flavorful garlic bread, which works as a lovely sponge for any sauces and juices that emerge from the dish.
There were two of us dining at Tender Greens on this occasion, so we were able to try two plates. That said, both of us went in a fishy direction with our choice of: the Seared Tuna and the Grilled Sea Bass. With the tuna, we had Romaine Hearts and Seasonal Vegetables. With the sea bass, also Romaine Hearts, and Seasoned Fries.
The tuna was magnificent. Seared beautifully on the edges while retaining a healthy pink in the middle, it’s a delicate yet meaty cut that is well seasoned. The romaine hearts are basic–greens, a little parmesan, and dressing on the side. But it’s all fresh and vibrant. The seasonal vegetables feature cauliflower, mushrooms, winter squash, and carrots.
Meanwhile, the sea bass is grilled to a crispy delight. The skin has a wonderful crunch, while the white fish is flaky and delicious. The fries are fat steak fries, yet still crispy.
There’s not a wasted bite at Tender Greens. No matter what you choose, it’s all great. You simply can’t go wrong.
