Keying the Lady Cavaliers was their 4×100-meter relay team who finished second with a season best time of 45.82 seconds. Runners on the squad included Jaela Williams, Madison Golden, Morgan Decantle and Jasmin Reed.

Winning the 400 relay was Westlake Oaks Christian at 45.66. The Lions also captured the state team title with 34 points to 24 for runner-up Temecula Great Oak. Oaks Christian ran away with the CIF-Southern Section Division IV crown on May 23 at Cerritos College.

Williams, not only placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, but blazed to a personal best time of 13.63 seconds.  It was shortly after she wore a cap and gown after graduating from Serra.

Reed, a sophomore, took fifth in the 100-meter dash clocking 11.74.

Premiere hurdler Justin Collins from Carson captured the state title in the 300 hurdles with a blazing time of 36.67 seconds, which ranked him sixth in the United States.

Collins also finished third in the 100 hurdles in 14.15. Winning the race was Simi Valley’s Alexander Billing (13.65) followed by second place Joe Anderson (Upland, 13.77).

His outstanding performance keyed the Colts to a fourth place team finish with 25 points. CIF-Southern Section champion Vista Murrieta, led by premiere junior sprinter Michael Norman, won the meet with 48 points.

Other top Colt finishers included their 4×100 relay, behind Collins, Brandon Hasson, Marquel Angelo and Ryan Hall, which placed fifth timing 42.25 and Hall in the 200 in 21.7.

Bishop Montgomery’s Tessa Allen tied for sixth with Riverside J.W. North’s Bria Palmer in the high jump at five feet, five inches.

Norman proved that he is one of the top prep track and field athletes of all-time in the nation after recording the country’s top time in the 200 clocking 20.3 and that is not wind aided. It is the third best all-time in the country. Norman also blazed to a time of 45.19 in easily winning the 400. That is also No. 1 in the U.S. this year.

Torrance softball captures division

By Joe Snyder

It took 13 innings but Torrance High’s softball team won the CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship with a 1-0 win over Highland High from Palmdale last Saturday at Deanna Manning Park in Irvine.

A walk-off single by Britney Jumalin bringing home pinch runner Abby Yamamoto in the top of the 13th inning proved to be the difference. Winning pitcher Marissa Moreno, who pitched all 13 innings, was able to hold off Highland in the bottom of the inning as the Lady Tartars captured their first Southern Section crown since 1991.

Moreno threw 178 pitches and struck out 14 batters.

Highland pitcher Rachel Garcia, who was Gatorade Player of the Year, went down with an injury in the top of the 12th. She tried to pitch the top of the 13th but crumbled into the pitcher’s circle with pain. She was unable to finish. She struck out 24 batters on 152 pitches.

Torrance ended its season at 27-9 after winning the Pioneer League title.

Reversed call costs South: For awhile, it appeared that South Torrance senior ace pitcher Drake Pingel got out of the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded in what appeared to be a double play after Serrano loaded the bases in last Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Division IV baseball final at San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino.

It happened when the Diamondbacks’ Daniel Brodie hit a groundball to right of South second baseman Josh Rotuna, who fielded the ball, threw to shortstop Kawika Hubbell for the force at second. Hubbell, then, threw to first but it was in the dirt. However, first baseman Matt Diederich reached for the ball and his foot came off the bag in the process. The first base umpire called Brodie out but Serrano coach Joe Knowlton disputed the call. After an umpires’ conference, Brodie was safe and the winning run scored.

South players felt that Diederich’s foot came off after he caught the ball but the umpires agreed that it was before he caught it.

The result was a 2-1 win for the Diamondbacks.

Down 1-0 entering the top of the seventh, the Spartans, who ended their season at 24-9, tied the game on a fielder’s choice hit by Rotuna scoring pinch runner Tanner Thompson (running for David Ramirez who led off with a single) after they loaded the bases.

Serrano loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh before winning it on the critical play.

Redondo captured its first CIF baseball title in its 100-year history of the program by routing Walnut 10-0 for the Division III crown.
