Police are investigating an incident which took place over the Thanksgiving holiday at a warehouse in Gardena, that saw thieves cause $500,000 in damage while getting no more than a few thousand dollars of copper and other items.
According to a Yahoo story, police are looking for those responsible, but the business owner believes that they live in a nearby RV.
The owners of the warehouse work with companies like Amazon and Chewy, and would normally be floor-to-ceiling with packages during the holiday season. However, this incident has resulted in a shut-down.
“It’s our busiest time of the year, and right now we can’t ship anything,” Andrew McKennon, the business owner, told Yahoo. “So, this could ruin our year.”
The report states that surveillance cameras have caught the guilty parties stealing televisions and other merchandise, but the greater financial impact comes from the fact that they cut the power to the building and stole copper wiring, and also cut copper piping which flooded the warehouse and damaged more items.
According to the report, “McKennon estimates his losses at more than $500,000. The thieves even brought a ladder to get to a copper pipe on the ceiling. IT’s worth about $300, but McKennon said it will cost him about $10,000 to fix.
“Worst part is that the people that did it are living in a motor home down the street,” McKennon said. “And we watched them, on the surveillance, take everything out of our building and pushing shopping carts down the street. And they’re literally still living down the street and the shopping carts are outside the motor home.”
Investigations are ongoing.
