Gardena High’s softball team had two players land on the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division II team, announced last week. Players were sophomore Elizabeth Flores and junior Lilliana Gudiel. Both helped the Lady Panthers make the CIF-L.A. City Section Division II championship game where they lost to East L.A. Garfield High 5-3 on May 21 at Cal State Northridge. Both also made first team AllMarine League. Gardena finished only fourth in the brutal Marine, that include City powers San Pedro, Carson and Wilmington Banning, at 4-6 and ended its 2022 season at 9-9 overall. Division II Player of the Year was Garfield sophomore Frankie Andijo. Carson had three players make the CIF-L.A. City Section Open Division team including freshman Ry Lee Gardner, senior Vai Panioni and junior Zaniah Puna. The Colts lost in the quarterfinals to Granada Hills Kennedy. Woodland Hills El Camino Real won the championship. In baseball, Gardena had two players make second team allMarine League in senior infi eld Darren Parker and Isaiah Gonzalez. Parker batted .265 and drove in 11 runs. Gonzalez hit .254, including three triples and 19 runs. The Panthers finished their 2022 season at 6-16 overall and 1-9 in the Marine League. Gardena made the CIF-L.A. City Section Division II playoffs, winning its wildcard round game over Canoga Park 3-1 before losing in the first round at Maywood Academy 8-1 last month. The Marine had quad Players of the Year in senior outfi elder Miles Hughes (Carson), senior pitcher Michael Barbar (Carson), senior pitcher Zach Geiss (San Pedro) and junior Owen Martin (Narbonne). All also made the L.A. City Section Open Division or Division I. The Gauchos advanced to the CIF-L.A. City Section Division I final, then fell to Garfield 5-3 on May 28 at Dodger Stadium. The Pirates and Colts fell in the Open Division quarterfinals.
