A week after some chaos inside and outside Serra High’s athletic stadium that ended the Serra-Long Beach Poly after halftime with the Jackrabbits winning 28-14, the Cavalier football team recovered with a 26-13 home win over Oaks Christian High from Westlake Village in a non-league game last Friday.

After the havoc that marred one of the most popular non-league prep football rivalries in California on Sept. 8, last week’s contest had some 35 security guards with very tight security to see nothing was repeated.

Serra senior running back Cincere Rhaney proved dominant in the Cavalier win over the Lions. He rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns. His first TD came in the first quarter on a 3-yard run giving Serra a 7-0 lead. Oaks Christian did threaten and it led to two field goals by Noah Laberge cutting Serra’s lead to 7-6, but a 12-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Jimmy

Butler to wide receiver C.J. McBean upped the Cavalier lead to 13-6 by the end of the first period.

After a scoreless second quarter that left Serra with a 13-6 halftime lead, the Cavaliers increased it to 20-6 on Rhaney’s 32-yard touchdown run with 5:22 left in the third period. Serra made it 26-6 with 10:34 remaining in the game when running back Camron Harris-Wilcot scored from four yards out.

The Lions attempted to rally when they cut the Cavaliers’ lead to two touchdowns on a 28-yard TD pass from quarterback to wide receiver Chase Farrell but that was all they could get as Serra saw its non-league record raised to 3-2.

The Cavaliers have a bye this week before opening the Mission League at home against Chaminade High from West Hills on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.

Shorthanded North upended by Paraclete

North Torrance High’s football team ran into several key players out with injuries and illnesses as Lancaster Paraclete rolled over the Saxons 40-13 in non-league play last Friday at North.

The Saxons were also plagued with several penalties and bad snaps that made things easier for the Spirits to score.

North was unable to score an offense touchdown until 1:41 left in the game when freshman quarterback Boogie Anetema tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to his brother Kingston.

Its other was a 33-yard interception return by Kingston Anetema that tied the game at seven late in the first quarter.

The Saxons had to contend with some outstanding speed by Paraclete. Wide receiver Adrian Jones scored TDs on big receptions of 67 and 63 yards. Dillon Booth, who was a CIF-Southern Section Division IV sprint finalist in track and field last season, had a 95-yard scoring run.

North did manage a few defensive plays including two interceptions by Kingston Anetema.

GHS records fourth shutout, this time vs. Washington

In non-league play, Gardena High’s football team’s opponents are finding points hard to come by.

For the fourth time in five games, the Panthers recorded a shutout with a 38-0 home win over Washington last Friday.

Offensively, Gardena, which improved to 5-0, raced to a 28-0 halftime lead before adding another touchdown and field goal in the second half.

The Panthers used their balanced effort on offense and defense.

Junior quarterback Isaiah Kim only attempted nine passes but completed five of them for one TD, a 30-yard pass to wide receiver Michael Browning.

Both of running back Myles Mason’s carries were for touchdowns on runs of 11 and 10 yards. Running back Xavier Grant rushed for 74 yards and one TD on just four carries. Keyshawn Hood ran for 34 yards and one touchdown on three carries.

Wide receiver Johann Wallace caught two passes for 32 yards.
