A special, free event for Gardena residents and neighbors will be held at the Nakoaka Community Center on August 10. The event aims to raise awareness of, “what can happen during earthquakes and how we can all improve safety and resilience.”
In addition, the event will showcase a new documentary called Quake Heroes, that “blends Hollywood storytelling with real-life heroism from the January 1994 Northridge earthquake. The film was created by SCEC with support from FEMA and many sponsors to inspire individual and community resilience.”
According to Cindy Matsuda, Gardena CERT Program Manager & President, TRI-CITY CERT Association, “There will be two film showings at 10:15 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Nakaoka auditorium. Gardena Police Department, Earthquake Country Alliance, LA County Fire and TRI-CITY CERT Association are participating together to bring this event to the City of Gardena. The purpose is to have residents watch the Quake Heroes film and prepare them for a large earthquake and to provide them with knowledge, resources, training and emergency supplies they can purchase.”
The event is hosted by the City of Gardena, Gardena Police Department, and TRI-CITY CERT, with support from the Statewide California Earthquake Center, RomaScope, Earthquake Country Alliance, and many others.
