Boulevard Nights in Gardena

By Brett Calllwood

The Gardena Cinema will host a special encore presentation of the 1979 Lowrider favorite Boulevard Nights, on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Retired union cameraman Cory Shiozaki, who worked on major feature and tv productions including Dances with Wolves, Back to the Future, Termination, and Training Day, said that he wants to help owner Judy Kim “preserve the iconic Gardena Theater.”

To that end, his former “Disney colleague Mark Aragon is a union soundman and on the side has been archiving the Lowrider culture for the past several decades. He, along with the Gardena theater, will for the first time present an encore screening of the 1979 Lowrider classic Boulevard Nights.”

Before the film, there will be a Q&A with director Michael Pressman, cast, and the writer Desmond Nakano (who also wrote American Me starring Edward James Olmo).

There will be food trucks, DJ music and a meet-and-greet before the show.

IMDB describes Boulevard Nights as, “Raymond Avila (Richard Yñiguez) is a young Mexican-American trying to resist the lure of street gangs in East Los Angeles. Raymond’s brother, Chuco (Danny De La Paz), has been less successful; despite Raymond’s attempts to steer him clear, Chuco finds a sense of belonging by being part of a gang. As Raymond’s relationship with his girlfriend (Marta Du Bois) deepens, he takes steps toward building himself a future. But all that is thrown into jeopardy when tragedy strikes and a gang war erupts.”
