As we build up to the General Municipal Election on June 2, the GVN will be speaking to the candidates, including Becky Romero, who is standing unopposed for City Clerk.
Can you give us a brief summary of your career / life in politics? What makes you an ideal candidate for this role?
For the past thirteen years, I have had the privilege of serving our community as the Deputy City Clerk under the leadership of City Clerk Mina Semenza. In this role, I have overseen the day‑to‑day operations of the office, implementing policies and procedures that have streamlined our workflow and made our processes more efficient.
Although this is my first step into an elected office, my tenure with the City has allowed me to work closely with our elected officials and gain a deep understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of public service. I have dedicated more than a decade to serving this community with integrity, professionalism, and care. That commitment is what drives me to seek the role of City Clerk. I am ready to bring my experience, dedication, and steady leadership to an office that residents can trust and rely on.
What makes Gardena special?
I moved to this City when I was just one year old, and it has been home ever since. I attended all Gardena schools, and my husband, David, and I have raised our two boys here. This community has shaped every stage of my life, and after all these years, it remains a place we are proud to call home.
If successful, what would your first act be? What are your priorities?
I will ensure that the Office of the City Clerk continues to serve the public with respect and integrity, while maintaining an open, organized, and accessible city government for all.
Where have the current council been successful, and where have they been less so?
I feel the current Council has been successful in investing in our infrastructure, especially in the new Community Aquatic & Senior Center which I know our community will enjoy. While I believe the hardest challenge would be facing potential impacts on casino revenues.
How is the campaign going so far?
I am running unopposed, so my campaign has been going great.
Any endorsements?
I am endorsed by: Mayor Tasha Cerda; Mayor Pro Tem Mark Henderson; Council Member Rodney Tanaka; City Clerk Mina Semenza; and the Gardena Police Officers Association.
What would you like to say to the people of Gardena?
I want to thank everyone for their support. I am running for City Clerk because I believe that my experience, dedication and commitment to public service has uniquely positioned me to continue strengthening the transparency, efficiency and accessibility. A vote for me is a vote for transparency.
