International music performed by PV Symphonic Band

The Palos Verdes Symphonic Bandwill present its annual Mother’s Day Concert starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 11 at the South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., in the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Organizers will be taking mothers and everyone else on a “relaxing vacation through musical compositions of Mexico, Spain, Ireland, Armenia, and the jungle.” The concert will be held indoors in the Frances Young Hall.

The program will feature several soloists. Band member Carvell Holloway will be featured in Alexander Arutiunian’s Concerto for Trumpet and Symphonic Band. Debbie Minnichelli (marimba) and Steve Catalano (flute and our concert master) will perform Carl Rigoli's Concerto for Marimba and Flute; Carl is a local composer and percussionist.

Additional selections will include works by Leroy Anderson,George Gates, Paul Creston, Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, and Jose Padilla.

Tickets are only $9 each for adults, with free admission for children 12 years of age and younger, and are available in the Botanic Garden courtyard just prior to concert time.

The Palos Verdes Symphonic Band, under the direction of David Stanton, consists of 70 local musicians dedicated since 1962to bringing the verybest in concert band music to the South Bay community. This year the band will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of prolific American composer, conductor, and arranger Morton Gould, born onDec. 10, 1913, and will include a work by Mr. Gould at each concert this season

On Mother’s Day, the band will be performing his compositions Cafe Rio, Cinerama March, and Tropical.
