Approximately 44 people gathered at Cerritos Park East on 166th St. in Cerritos for the Annual Summer BBQ of the La Palma-Cerritos American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Sunday, Aug. 19. AAUW members, their spouses and guests, relaxed under the shade of trees and the shelter provided at the park. In spite of the warm 95 degree heat, members and their guests enjoyed the potluck luncheon of delicious BBQ chicken, salads, desserts and other side dishes which were brought by members.
President Barbara Dunstan welcomed members and guests to the potluck and even brought a water sprayer to help people get cooler. She noted that most of the husbands were hiding under the shade of the nearby trees to enjoy the breeze there and to keep cool.
The event provided an opportunity for members and potential members to get to know one another while helping to raise funds to support the AAUW’s activities. Donations were accepted from the group in attendance to assist the AAUW’s Educational Foundation, the General Fund and the Legal Advocacy Fund.
Dunstan thanked Gail Ross and Ellen Heymann for coordinating the potluck event. She also thanked everyone who helped plan for the potluck, especially Sue Carruthers for collecting funds from members to pay for the BBQ chicken.
Dunstan invited everyone to come to the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW’s first official meeting of the 2012-2013 year on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Skyline Room of the Cerritos Library, 18025 Bloomfield Ave. in Cerritos. There will be a potluck for members and potential members from 6 to 7 p.m. The potluck will be followed by a speaker from the League of Women Voters, who will discuss upcoming ballot measures from 7 to 8 p.m.
There will also be a Business Meeting from 8 to 8:30 p.m. with opportunity to sign up for eight interest groups, including Readers’ Theatre, Las Comadres, Games Nights, Mah Jongg, Gourmet Group, Food-Friends-and Fun, Cover to Cover, and Great Decisions.
