Gardena City Mayor Pro Tem Mark Henderson, Ed.D, has been selected Man of the Year 2016 for the Western Jurisdiction of United Methodist Men. He will be honored during the event.

Attendees will be serenated with such tunes as Leon Thomas’ A song for my Father, Mariah’s Carey’s Hero and the late Luther Vandross’ Dance with my Father Again, the theme song.  The group will sing several original compositions and a few old favorites that will have attendees dancing in the aisles,” said Western Jurisdiction United Methodist Men’s President Richard Kim. As with all DSF concerts, this one, too, will serve up a bit of theater and poetry.

Vocalist Tamra Dozier, who had a conflict last year, will join the group in June and lead several of the songs. Those who have heard her sing have compared her to ‘Queen of Soul’ Aretha Franklin and the late Gospel great Mahalia Jackson.

DSF will also introduce vocalist Fay Keyes, who will serve as the group’s MC beginning with this event. “If you like Gospel great Rance Allen, you will love Ms. Keyes,” said Larry Dozier, manager of DSF and WJUMMen Vice President.

There will be prizes for the oldest and youngest father in attendance. Prizes will be awarded, also, to the father with the most of his children in attendance.  Each will receive a copy of Dr. Osmond Lindo’s book, Real Men Read Jesus’ Parables. Dr. Lindo was the Man of the Year honoree for 2015.

The menu will be a choice of entrees: Herb Roasted Breast of Chicken or Roast Beef with Mushroom gravy and all the sides. Dessert will be Marble cake with butter cream frosting and cream cheese filling.

There is free onsite parking.

Reservations should be made by June 10. The donation is $45 for adults, two for $85, and $25 for children under 12 when tickets are purchased or reserved by the deadline, June 10. To make reservations call 310-719-8974, 310-365-1331, or send an email message to lrrdz@att.net.  Checks should be made to “Western Jurisdiction United Methodist Men” or WJUMM.

Dr. Henderson is a member of the Gardena City Council and is now serving as Mayor Pro Tem.  He is a member of a community-based organization called “The Brothers.” (www.brotherinc.org). The purpose of this agency is to speak to the demographic groups of African-American and Latino males on the topics of academic achievement, visioning, mentoring, and life mapping. He desires African-American and Latino youth to succeed in the professional business environment.  “I believe that as minority males better position themselves to succeed, we will indeed disprove many inaccurate beliefs regarding our potential. As we improve and progress, so does our community.”

Western Jurisdiction UMMen is co-sponsoring the event with DSF.  Recently elected President Richard Kim says that he’s excited about partnering with DSF to honor Fathers on their special day. “Brother Larry Dozier and I have worked together for many years to grow this organization. We shall continue to do so with programs such as this and varied, future endeavors.”
