A talk on “the Unfinished Business After Redress,” as well and the presentation of ACR 85 by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi will commemorate the 2014 Day of Remembrance Saturday, March 1, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, 1964 W. 162nd St., Gardena.
UCLA Professor Lane Hirabayashi will be the main speaker, and there will be entertainment by members of the Grateful Crane Ensemble.
Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), who represents the 66th Assembly District which includes Gardena, authored Assembly Concurrent Resolution 85, declaring Feb. 19, 2014 as a Day of Remembrance in California, to increase public awareness of the events surrounding the internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II.
“As a Japanese American, I am privileged to stand alongside my fellow Americans and pay tribute to our brothers and sisters who endured life-changing hardships during World War II,” Muratsuchi said.”
This Day of Remembrance marks the 72nd Anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066, which caused the wrongful removal and detention of more than 120,000 men, women and children of Japanese ancestry during the war.
JCI Executive Director Alison Kochiyama said the annual Day of Remembrance event has been well received locally.
“We are very happy about the overwhelming support for this event and look forward to continuing culturally relevant programming for the community,” Alison Kochiyama, executive director of the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute said. ‘We welcome you to join Assemblymember Muratsuchi and the Gardena Valley JCI to learn about ACR 85 and hear from guest speakers on this historic event.”
The public is invited.
