Rain or shine, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Committee of Gardena will present the 32nd annual King Day Parade. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016.

The parade will make its annual excursion through parts of the city beginning at 10 a.m. on the corner of Van Ness and Marine avenues. This year the committee honors Rev. Omsrosa Manigault, minister, philanthropist, reality TV personality, ambassador, and business executiveThe Community Grand Marshall will be the Giuliano family who owns Gardena Giuliano’s Bakery and Delicatessen, which has been serving classic Italian Cuisine since 1952 in the community.

“We have maintained a proud tradition and consistent line up of distinguished Grand Marshals,” a city official said.

Recent participants have included, the“Fastest Woman Alive” OlympianCarmelita Jeter aka “JET”(2012 London Olympic gold medalist), Olympian Marilyn White– (1964 Tokyo Olympics),  Omar Miller Benson (CSI Miami), Tammi Mac and Don Amichie(KJLH Radio) and Nautica De la Cruz(KJLH Radio).

Other entries include local and state dignitaries, local high, middle school and elementary school bands and drill teams and a variety of civic and community clubs and organizations.

Following the parade will be a short stage presentation and special recognitions at Rowley Park.

The Parade will start promptly at 10 a.m. from Marine and Van Ness avenues, heading north on Van Ness to 132nd Street, turning right at the north street adjacent to Rowley Park.

The community is also invited to the 43rd annual Youth Night Program starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 at the Nakaoka Community Center, 1670 W. 162nd Street. The program is free and will feature local youth talent and the presentation of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay winners.

 

Celebrity Grand Marshal

Rev. Omarosa Manigault is this year’s grand marshal for the 32nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Parade. “We are very excited honored to have Rev. Omarosa Manigault as this year’s parade grand marshal.” The city of Gardena of has the proud distinction of being one of the first cites west of the Mississippi to have an official celebration of Dr.King’s birthday.

The community grand marsal is the Giuliano family. The Giulanio family have operated their delicatessen since 1952.
