Mylar balloon causes May 14 power loss

More than 1,200 Southern California Edison customers in Gardena were without power last week when a Mylar balloon caused an outage May 14, officials said

Power was lost from 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 till all power was restored at 5:40 a.m. Thursday, an Edison spokesperson told the Daily Breeze.

Affected areas were 144th Street and Manhattan Beach Boulevard from north to south, and Gramercy Place to Crenshaw Boulevard, going east and west.

Edison officials have an education program ongoing to educate customers about the dangers of kites, metallic balloons and streamers becoming entangled with power lines, as reported last week by the Breeze.

State law requires that balloons be weighted or kept indoors to avoid power issues, the Edison official said.
