North Torrance High’s girls’ basketball team is 3-0 in the Pioneer League after wins over host South Torrance and visiting Torrance last week. At South on Jan. 19, the Lady Saxons downed the Spartans 52-36. At North last Friday, the Saxons pulled away from the Tartars 69-42. Against Torrance, North started fast leading 21-11 after the fi rst quarter but Torrance closed the gap trailing 33-26 at halftime. In the third period, the Tartars got as close as two points but the Saxons responded and upped their lead up to 12 at 49-37 by the end of the period. North turned the game into a rout by outscoring Torrance 20-5 in the fourth quarter. The Saxons had balanced scoring led by Dara Tokeshi with a game-high 20 points. Noelani Pablo added 13 points and Sage Misumi chipped in 10. The Tartars were led by Presley Tanaka with 12 points. Kacey Omura contributed 10 points. North visits Lawndale Friday and hosts West Torrance next Wednesday. Both league games begin at 6 p.m. Serra High’s girls’ basketball team played three games, including one Del Rey League game at home against La Puente Bishop Amat on Jan. 18. The Lady Cavaliers were able to top the Lancers 65-61. Serra’s two non-league games ended in losses. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Jan. 17) at Serra, the Cavaliers fell short to Junipero Serra Catholic from San Juan Capistrano 62-56. Last Saturday, Serra was routed by host South Pasadena 78-55. Against San Juan Capistrano Serra, the Cavaliers had a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds by Jailah Donald. Brooklyn Taylor fi nished with 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Myanna Emery had 11 points. Donald led Serra with 27 points against Bishop Amat. After hosting St. Paul in Del Rey action on Tuesday, the Cavaliers will have a key league rivalry game at Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance today at 7 p.m. Serra visits St. Paul in Santa Fe Springs Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting Bishop Montgomery in a rare Sunday league make-up game from an earlier postponement due to COVID-19 protocols, starting at 1:30 p.m. The Cavaliers host St. Anthony of Long Beach next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
