Police are investigating two separate crashes that led to two fatalities and one injury on Sunday, February 11.
A five-year-old boy was killed on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Marine and Budlong avenues. Police arrived to find two pedestrians in the road, and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His grandmother was taken to the hospital.
“A preliminary investigation revealed an unknown driver was traveling eastbound on Marine Ave approaching Budlong Ave. The driver turned north on Budlong Ave. colliding with both pedestrians in the crosswalk. The driver then fled the scene,” police said in a statement.
The identity of the child is currently being withheld.
Earlier, just before 4 a.m., police were called to the intersection of Vermont Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard where they found a woman in the road. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to Yahoo News, “The driver in that crash, though, stayed at the scene. Police said the preliminary investigation showed that the driver was headed south on Vermont, when they hit the pedestrian who was in the intersection.”
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing. Any members of the public with additional information are asked to call the Gardena Police.
