For the last two-and-a-half decades, youth from around the Southern California have come to Gardena to test their skills. The City will open its door early Saturday, March 22 for the 27th annual Youth Chess Tournament at the Nakaoka Community Center, 1670 W. 162nd St., Gardena. Matches start at 9 a.m.
The challenge is on in all divisions from kindergarten to 12th grade, with winners vying for trophies.

Participants must know how the pieces move, but beginners are welcome. There will be grade level divisions and prizes from 1st to 3rd winners. Each division is limited to 14 participants.
The event was started in the late 1980s by then Mayor Don Dear. Dear continues to attend the annual chess tourney, and oversees the judging.
Registration as of March 18 to Friday, March 21 will be $5 per entrant. A late registration fee of $10 will be accepted on the day of the tournament.
Walk-in registrants should visit the Recreation Division Office in the Nakaoka Community Center weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Youth competitors can bring lunch and a Stanton chess set on Saturday. Some sets will be provided. There will be a snack bar available.
