Serra High’s boys’ basketball team hosted its own Cavalier Showcase Classic and it faced Chaminade which certainly displayed its outstanding shooting and passing last Saturday.
The Eagles, who won the California State Division III championship last season, made 12 three-point baskets enroute to a 75-58 victory over the mostly young and inexperienced Cavaliers.
Chaminade jumped quickly on Serra with a 25-11 lead after the first quarter.

Chaminade jumped quickly on Serra with a 25-11 lead after the first quarter.
The Cavaliers got as close as five points in the late second and early third periods but the hot shooting Eagles began to burn the Cavaliers as they pulled away. Chaminade, whose roster also includes five point guards as their outstanding passing led to many of their points, would lead by as many as 21 points and won handily.
The Eagles, in fact, tallied a total of 25 assists, 19 of those by two key point guards in senior Jordan Ogundiran (11 assists) and freshman Michael Wilson with eight.
“Chaminade played really well,” Serra head coach Dwan Hurt said. “We weren’t able to defend. We have a young team with just two returning players. We started one freshman, one sophomore, one junior and two seniors.”
One of those two returning players, junior guard-forward Ian Carter, led the Cavaliers (7-8) with 16 points. The other returning Serra player, all-CIF Southern Section point guard Jason Richardson and Leonard Murray II, added 10 points apiece.
Miguel Oguine led the Eagles’ scoring with a game-high 23 points, followed by Ogundiran with 18.
Serra has two more showcases over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend. Its first will be on Saturday against Oak Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Cavaliers will play in another MLK Classic at Price Christian High in South Los Angeles on Monday but their opponent is to be determined. The Cavaliers, then, begin the Del Rey League at home against rival Playa del Rey St. Bernard next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Serra High’s girls’ basketball team will begin the highly competitive Del Rey League at home against Bishop Amat tonight at 7 p.m.
Last Friday, the Lady Cavaliers got off to a good start but were unable to hold on as they fell to Oaks Christian High from Westlake Village 54-46 in a Sierra Canyon Showcase Classic game last Saturday in Chatsworth.
Serra started fast in taking a 15-6 first quarter lead and still led by eight (27-19) at halftime.
In the second half, however, things turned around as the Lions outscored the Cavaliers 24-9 to take a seven-point (43-36) lead. That period proved to be the difference as Oaks Christian maintained the lead for the rest of the contest. The Lions are one of the top teams in California this season.
Brooke Bayman led Serra with 12 points and five assists. Camille Hailey added nine points and three assists. Nautica Morrow contributed seven points and 13 rebounds and Brijaye Brackett had six points and eight rebounds.
Serra, which fell to 9-5, hopes to get back on the winning column against the Lancers tonight. The Cavaliers host Coronado from San Diego in a non-league contest Saturday at 1 p.m. and then, after the game, will board the bus to St. Genevieve High in Panorama City to face Oaks Christian, again, in the War on the Floor Classic at 8:30 p.m. The Cavaliers will host Alemany in their Martin Luther King, Jr. Showcase Classic next Monday at 6:30 p.m. before resuming Del Rey action against St. Anthony from Long Beach next Thursday at 7 p.m.

Gardena goes 4-0 at Kennedy Tournament for co-title
By Joe Snyder

Last week, Gardena High’s boys’ basketball team played in what was billed more as a “four-day” showcase classic at Kennedy High in Granada Hills.
The Panthers, though, made it worth it as they went 4-0 in the tournament that just included pool play with no real championship game. Gardena started the classic with a 57-48 win over Verdugo Hills on Jan. 5. A day later, the Panthers downed North Hollywood 54-40. On Jan. 7, Gardena defeated Van Nuys Grant 58-53, then finished unbeaten with a 60-46 victory over the host Cougars.
University from West Los Angeles won the other pool, also going 4-0.
Against Kennedy, the Panthers led throughout virtually the entire game. They led 29-24 at halftime and 43-36 after three quarters, then pulled away in the final period.
Christian Cataring led Gardena, which improved to 12-3, with 17 points, followed closely by Clarence Bookman with 16.
Issac Green led the Panthers with 17 points against Grant. Bookman sparked Gardena with 21 points in its win over North Hollywood. Michael Thompson put in 17 points against Verdugo Hills.
Gardena resumed the Marine League on Wednesday at Carson and comes home to face King-Drew Medical Magnet High Friday at 7 p.m.
