Gardena High’s girls’ basketball team used a stifling defense as it defeated Narbonne 28-18 in a Marine League game Friday at Gardena.
In a contest where neither team scored double figures in a quarter, the Lady Panthers started off well, leading 8-2 after the first quarter and 15-11 at halftime. Both defenses continued to dominate the second half as both squads totaled a combined 20 points, but Gardena was able to pull away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Gauchos 7-3.
The contest, though, was marred by a rash of turnovers from both teams.
Yaneh Pineda was the only player in the game to score in double figures, leading the Panthers with 15 points. Isabella Sanchez added eight points.
Chavel Aiams and Gidayah Meadows shared Narbonne’s top scoring honors with seven points, apiece.
Two days earlier at Gardena, the Panthers fell to the Colts 47-32.
Gardena started well with a 9-4 first quarter lead was outscored by Carson 30-9 in the next two quarters as the Colts took a 34-18 lead into the fourth period and coasted from there.
Saniya Keyes led the Panthers with 14 points, followed by Isabella Sanchez with 12 but the rest of the team mustered only six points.
Carson was led by Isra Neal with a game-high 15 points.
Gardena will host Banning from Wilmington Friday and visit Rancho Dominguez Prep in Long Beach next Wednesday. Both Marine games begin at 4:30 p.m.
Serra raised its Camino Real League record to 9-0 with wins over La Puente Bishop Amat and Alhambra Ramona Convent last week. At Serra on Jan. 20, the Cavaliers downed the Lancers 41-28. Kali Carter led Serra (18-4) with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Carter also led the Cavaliers with 14 points and six rebounds in Serra’s 74-29 rout of host Ramona Convent. Yve Young chipped in 12 points.
In a non-league game on Jan. 19 at Serra, the Cavaliers defeated San Pedro 50-31.
Mariyah Lewis and Iani Paul shared Serra’s high scoring honors with 11 points each. Carter contributed 10 points.
The Cavaliers will host St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy from Downey today at 7 p.m. and visit Cantwell-Sacred Heart in Montebello on Saturday at the same time. Serra closes CRL play at Bishop Conaty-Loretto in Los Angeles next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
North Torrance High’s girls’ basketball team will have its second Bay League showdown at Redondo Friday at 5:30 p.m. before closing league at Peninsula in Rolling Hills Estates next Tuesday at the same time.

Panther boys routed by Narbonne
Gardena High’s young and inexperienced boys’ basketball team attempted to keep up with Marine League leading Narbonne trailing 30-28 at halftime.
The Gauchos, who are ranked seventh in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section by MaxPreps, proved much too quick and physical for the Panthers in the second half as they turned the game into a rout with a 75-48 win Friday at Gardena.
Gardena, which is 1-5 in league and 6-13 overall, was led by Joshua Edema with 12 points. Darryon Hubbard had 10 points and Tristan Williams put in nine.
The Gauchos, who are 5-1 in Marine action, were led by Brandon Key with a game-high 27 points. Quamare Meadows tallied 13 points. Narbonne outscored the Panthers 45-20 in the second half.
At Carson on Jan. 21, Gardena fell short of the Colts 49-48.
After visiting San Pedro on Wednesday, Gardena is at Banning in Wilmington Friday at 4:30 p.m. before hosting Long Beach Rancho Dominguez Prep Wednesday at the same time.
Serra improved to 3-2 in the Camino Real League and 14-10 overall by downing host Bosco Tech 79-58 on Jan. 21 in Rosemead. Chinemeran Anyikwa led the Cavaliers with 27 points, followed by Darryl Wasson with 17. Daniel Roberston totaled 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Drew Carter had eight points and eight assists.
The Cavaliers played two non-league games. On Jan. 19 at Serra, the Cavaliers were routed by Downey Warren 99-57. Also at Serra last Saturday, the Cavaliers slipped past Hollywood Bernstein 83-79. Anyikwa led Serra with 34 points in its loss to the Bears and 39 in its win against Bernstein. Wasson had 27 points against Bernstein.
After hosting Bishop Amat in league on Wednesday, the Cavaliers visit frontrunning and rival Bishop Montgomery in Torrance Friday. Serra has a league finale at home against Verbum Dei-Jesuit Monday and a non-league finale against CIF-L.A. City school Forshay on Wednesday. All games begin at 7 p.m.
North Torrance won its only Pioneer League game at home over cross town rival South Torrance 49-32 on Friday. After hosting West Torrance on Tuesday, the Saxons play their final Pioneer games on the road against El Segundo on Friday and at Torrance next Tuesday, both at 7 p.m.

CSUDH men’s splits pair with rival CSLA
The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team avenged its earlier defeat by rival Cal State Los Angeles with a 72-56 victory Saturday at the Toro Dome.
The Toros surged to a 32-20 halftime lead and continued to have a comfortable lead in their 14th win against five losses including ninth California Collegiate Athletic Association win against three losses.
Leading Cal State Dominguez’s balanced scoring was Zu-Ontay Boothman with 13 points. Jalen Brown added 11 points. Da Sean Stevens and Josiah Sanders each chipped in 10 points. Stevens hauled down seven rebounds.
The Golden Eagles (6-13, 5-7) were led by Khenanni Davis with 12 points and Deraje Agbaosi with 10 points and eight rebounds.
At Cal State L.A. last Thursday, the Golden Eagles upset the Toros 82-77.
In a thrilling contest, the Eagles took a 36-35 halftime lead, then outscored CSDH 46-42 in the second half.
Leading Cal State Dominguez was Josiah Sanders with 23 points and six rebounds. De Sean Stevens chipped in 17 points; Jalen Brown chipped in 14 points, and David Cheatan had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Deraje Agbaosi led CSLA with 22 points and six rebounds.
Last season, the Toros had their best season ever by winning the CCAA and NCAA Division II Western Regional crowns before losing the championship to Nova Southeastern from Florida 74-73.
After being CCAA and NCAA Division II Western Regional champions last year, the CSDH women appear to be rebuilding with a 3-9 CCAA record that included losses of 87-83 and 78-65 to Cal State L.A. last week.
Despite the loss to the host Golden Eagles last Thursday, the Lady Toros were led by Anela Thomas with a game-high 30 points. Amaya Washington and Lopez Woods added 14 and 10 points, in order. Woods pulled down eight rebounds.
The Golden Eagles were led by Sofia Fidelus with 19 points and Ariyah Smith with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
At CSDH, Cal State Dominguez trailed virtually the entire game in its loss to CSLA.
Bryanne Lopez-Wood led the Toros with 22 points. Nevaeh Asiasi had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Mariah Blake contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.
Cal State L.A. was led by Fidelus with 19 points.
Cal State Dominguez will host Chico State today with the women starting at 5:30 p.m. and the men beginning at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Toros are at home against Cal Poly Humboldt with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.
El Camino College’s men’s basketball team is enjoying its best season in several years with a 12-8 overall record, including 2-0 in the South Coast Conference. At Compton College on Jan. 21, the Warrior men topped the Tartars 83-79 and at ECC last Friday, they defeated Long Beach City College 72-66.
