The 93rd Installation of Officers for the Gardena Valley Lions Club, as well as the installation of incoming president Steve Sherman, is planned for Saturday, July 30 at the El Pollo Inka Restaurant in Gardena. A social hour kicks off the event at 11 a.m., followed by the program at noon.

Sherman joined and officially became a “baby Lion” on Feb. 1, 2006.  On July 1, 2007, he accepted the position of treasurer of the GV Lions, a position that he has retained that office to the present time. His wings began to fly in 2010, when District Gov. Sol “Sunshine” Santiago asked Sherman to be her district photographer.

“He has really enjoyed serving as district photographer for every incoming District Governor each year thereafter,” a GV Lion officer said. “Steve takes pride in having the photos available for all members on the e-clubhouse website promptly after an event.”

On Dec. 9, 2008, Steve was appointed to the City of Gardena Planning Commission by Councilman Dan Medina. He said he is also a proud lifetime member and event photographer for Friends of Gardena Library.

“Steve can always be found with his face in a book, or out walking the sidewalks of the City of Gardena for physical exercise and enjoyment,” a Lion officier said. “It’s also common to find Steve attending functions with a camera around his neck.”

Sherman and his wife Cheral enjoy traveling – when time allows in their busy schedule.  They recently returned from the 99th International Lions Convention in Fukuoka, Japan.

Sheman will take over the reigns from outgoing president Lion D. B. Baughman.

The meal will offer a choice of beef, chicken or fish for a donation of $25. El Pollo Inka Restaurant is at 1425 W. Artesia Blvd., Gardena.

Those interested can mail reservations payable to GVL by Monday, July 25, to Secretary Lion Frank Onderka at 1036 West Gardena Blvd., Suite 5, Gardena 90247. For questions, Onderka can be reached via email frankgvlion@aol.com or 310-768-1836.

Lions International is the world’s largest service club organization and the Gardena Valley Lions Club is the oldest club in the City of Gardena.
