Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos in Gardena

By Brett Callwood

‘The witching season brings with it multiple events in and around Gardena. At 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Halloween, Too Cute to Spook takes place at Johnson Park (1200 W. 170th St., Gardena 90247).

“Bring your kiddos (age 12 and under) to the park for a safe, fun-filled night of trick-or-treating and more,” reads the flyer. There are costume contents in the categories 4 and under, 5-8, 9-12, and family costumes.

For those a little more mature, Halloween Scare Zone will take place in the evening. “Come and join us for a thrilling Halloween night at our scare zone,” reads a statement. “Warning: Due to the explicit and frightening nature of the haunted houses, they are not recommended for children under 13.”

That event takes place at 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Halloween, at Freeman Park, 2100 W. 154th Pl. Gardena 90249. For both of those events, visit cityofgardena.org/events. Contact 310-217-9537.

At 7:30 p.m. on the same evening, the Gardena Cinema will host a Halloween special. “Halloween Bash and Monster Mash,” they say. “Live music, adult refreshments, costume contest & double feature: Demon Knight + Bordello of Blood.” Visit gardenacinema.com for more information.

Both are part of the Tales From the Crypt series, and are described on the TFTC fan page as, “Demon Knight is a feature-length film presented by the HBOseries Tales from the Crypt, and features scenes with the Crypt Keeper (voiced by John Kassir, as in the series) at the beginning and end of the film. The film was followed by Bordello of Blood; although it is not a direct sequel, the key artifact from this film makes an appearance.”

On November 1, the city will host its Die De Los Muertos event. “A community celebration that reunites the living and the dead,” a statement reads. “A display of altars is created to honor departed family members that have passed. Dia De Los Muertos is an important holiday throughout Latin America.”

That event takes place at 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 1700 W. 162d St. Gardena 90247. Visit cityofgardena.org/events. Contact 310-217-9537.
