Local driver looking to trash the competition

By Brett Callwood

Gardena’s Jesus Lizares is heading to Phoenix, AZ this week to compete in the Republic Services ROAD-EO National Championship, aiming to be this country’s best garbage truck driver for the third time.

According to the competition website, “ROAD-EO National Championship Finalists receive an expense-paid trip for two to Phoenix, pay for their time away, luxury accommodations, hosted dinners and activities, a day competing at the ROAD-EO, an awards celebration, gifts from Republic Services and much more! Additionally, first, second and third place winners of the ROAD-EO National Championship receive cash prizes and paid time off (PTO). It’s an amazing event and a great time of celebration.”

The competition is fierce, as drivers have to negotiate an obstacle course, maneuver through tight stations without disturbing barrels, and identify maintenance issues on a vehicle.

Jesus has been with Republic Services for seven years and took first place in the 2019 ROAD-EO National Championship, and then again in 2021 – making this the first time the company has had a back-to-back champion (championships take place every other year),” reads a company statement.

Whether Lizares brings the trophy back to Gardena for a third time remains to be seen.
