North Torrance High’s football team began the Pioneer League by rolling over El Segundo 47-7 last Friday at North.
The Saxons were led by quarterback Trevor Lagarde who threw for five touchdowns, four of those to running back-wide receiver Dylan Williams. Senior tight end Jonahan Jurado also caught a TD pass.
North (5-1 overall) visits cross town rival South Torrance in their second league game Friday at 7 p.m.
In a key Pioneer game, host West Torrance blew by South 48-20.
The Warriors, who improved to 3-3 overall, were led by senior quarterback Jackson Sharmon who threw for three touchdown passes. Running back Brett James rushed for 115 yards and one TD, a 15-yard run that game the Warriors a 34-6 lead in the third quarter. James Thompson (50-yard run) and Degan Jones (5-yard reception) also scored for West.
For the Spartans, quarterback Matt Espinoza threw for two touchdowns.
West will be tested at Pioneer power Lawndale for a 7 p.m. on Friday. The Cardinals won their league opener and improved to 2-4 overall with a 19-10 win over Torrance last Friday at Zamperini Field.
Host Bishop Montgomery improved to 2-1 in the Camino Real League with a 38-27 win over rival San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea last Friday. Quarterback Diego Rodriguez sparked the Knights (4-1-1) by throwing for three touchdowns.
Bishop Montgomery has a bye week this week before hosting Verbum Dei High from southeast L.A. on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
