5 candidates to vie for Miss Cinco de Mayo crown

Five young women will vie for the coveted Gardena Miss Cinco de Mayo Sunday, April 26 during the 29th Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Coronation at the Gardena Masonic Lodge, 1250 W. 155th St., Gardena.

Five young women will vie for the coveted Gardena Miss Cinco de Mayo Sunday, April 26 during the 29th Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Coronation at the Gardena Masonic Lodge, 1250 W. 155th St., Gardena.

This year’s candidates are Elizabeth Avila, a Gardena High student who wants to become a physical education teacher or a trainer; Jessica Huerta Mitchell, an El Camino College student studying cosmetology and has aspirations of owning a beauty shop; Paola Roque of Gardena High, who volunteers time in the community and in her church; Noemi Santa Cruz, a senior at Azusa Pacific University studying to be a teacher; and Miriam Santos of GSH, who plans to major in psychology at CSU Northridge.

Tickets to the event are $25 for adults and $12 for children ages 5 to 11 years. There will be a dinner, entertainment and music. The coronation will follow.

The queen and her court will take part in the City of Gardena Cinco de Mayo Parade starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2 in downtown Gardena. The parade will travel west and north, disbanding at Fukai Park. This year’s grand marshals will be Kathy Barbosa, owner of the Burnt Tortilla Restaurant and Sports Bar, and Ronald McDonald.
