Assemblyman David Hadley, R-Torrance, joined with the Barona Band of Mission Indians to award Denker Elementary School with the Barona Education Grant on Sept. 17. The grant awards $5,000 towards the purchase of new computers for the school's technology lab.
"When the Barona Mission Indians committed to support a public school in the South Bay with an education grant, my office and I sought and received a number of applications from our local schools," said Assemblyman Hadley. "We got some strong applications, but we were most impressed with Denker Elementary School and are so pleased to be able to award this grant on behalf of Barona.”
In 2002, the Barona Band of Mission Indians established the Barona Indian Charter School to serve Tribal children and the children of their employees and neighbors. The program's goal is to build strong educational opportunities for the children of California as they have with the children at the Barona Indian Charter School. Education has always been an important part of the Barona tradition.
At Denker Elementary School, the technology lab is open every day of the school year. They have a rotating schedule that allows teachers and students to use the lab on a weekly bases and it is made available to their after-school program students and parents for evening classes.
"We are so honored and grateful to accept this generous grant for upgrading our technology lab with new iMac computers," said Principal Judy Manyweather. "On behalf of all of the students at Denker Elementary school, I would like to thank the Barona Band of Mission Indians for awarding us this grant and Assemblyman David Hadley for nominating us."
Assemblyman Hadley represents the 66th Assembly District, which includes the South Bay communities of Torrance, Gardena, Lomita, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and portions of Los Angeles.
