City Council candidate Valerie Loduem speaks

By Brett Callwood

As we build up to the General Municipal Election on June 2, the GVN will be speaking to the candidates, starting with Valerie Loduem, who is standing for City Council…

Can you give us a brief summary of your career / life in politics? What makes you an ideal candidate for this role?

My career has spanned from the private to non-profit sector. I began my career in the entertainment industry as a Production Accountant on various films and television projects. I then joined the real estate field as a Marketing Director for a large shopping center. After many years in the private sector, I felt a need to embark on a career that could do good for the community. Hence, my entry into non-profit, where I have been for the last 20 years. I have worked in various leadership roles spanning from fundraising to community initiatives. Additionally, I currently serve as Chairperson of the City of Gardena’s Human Services Commission.

I am an ideal candidate for the Gardena City Council because I am a proven leader with successful results. I am collaborative, forward thinking, and innovative. I spent my formative years in Gardena and have a sincere interest in seeing the city thrive.

What makes Gardena special?

Gardena is one of those cities that gives you a small town feel. We have small businesses that have been around since I was in High School that are still here. Many of the business owners know me by name and have seen my son grow. One other unique thing about Gardena is that it is generational. Many of the people I have grown up with have returned to the city. Gardena has always been our “Happy” place. Also, Gardena really takes care of their Seniors with many programs and opportunities for Seniors to thrive.

If successful, what would your first act be? What are your priorities?

WHEN I am successful, one of the first things I will do is learn and understand the lay of the land. Additionally, I will make it a priority to meet my constituents and hear their concerns or praise.

Where have the current council been successful, and where have they been less so?

The current council has been great in keeping the residents engaged in various community events and opportunities. They have also made an effort in keeping the residents informed of progress in the city. ie., the new Senior and Aquatics center, and the new Sprouts. Where they have not been successful is communicating with residents of projects that have not moved forward and giving clear and concise as to why. Also, there is a blatant disconnect within the City Council which is visible to the resident.

How is the campaign going so far?

The campaign is going great. I am really getting a late start due to a couple of hiccups, but I am now moving forward with vigor!

What would you like to say to the people of Gardena?

I would say to the people of Gardena, I am not a politician. I am a leader who makes things happen. I listen and act. I love Gardena, and I want the city to grow and prosper. I cannot make promises that I can’t keep to. The City Council works as a collective and my hope when I am elected is that we can operate a collective unit to bring greatness to the City of Gardena.
