As we build up to the General Municipal Election on June 2, the GVN will be speaking to the candidates, continuing with sitting Mayor Tasha Cerda…
Why do you think you’re still the right person to be Mayor?
I believe I am the right person to serve as Mayor because this position represents the entire city. The person who holds this office should be a good steward — someone who is honest, trustworthy, and leads with integrity. These are qualities I proudly possess. I understand the rules and ordinances that guide our city, and I also believe in the importance of listening to the community. My goal is to maintain balance, ensure transparency, and make certain that everyone’s voice in our city is heard and respected.
What have been your biggest successes so far?
One of my biggest accomplishments so far has been helping strengthen our city’s budget. Currently, Gardena has one of the largest budgets in its history, with revenues consistently exceeding expenses. In addition, our reserve funds have grown to $34 million, and our investments are at their highest levels ever. This is important because everything we do as a city depends on strong financial management. From hiring employees and purchasing equipment to providing essential services, a healthy budget allows us to operate more efficiently and continue moving our city forward.
If successful in this election, what are your priorities moving forward?
If elected, I will continue working to make Gardena a destination city that residents are proud to call home. My focus will remain on public safety, strong financial management, seniors and youth programs, environmental responsibility, addressing homelessness, economic development, and improving parking throughout our community. Over the past nine years, Gardena has experienced significant and noticeable progress. Property values have increased by more than $3 billion, crime has decreased, and homelessness has been reduced by 81%. New businesses, such as Sprouts, are choosing to invest in Gardena, and the city continues to build outstanding amenities for our residents, including a new Aquatics and Senior Center, Teen Center, Dog Park and a Community Center on Rosecrans and Purche. In addition, the city now hosts more than 100 community events that bring residents together and strengthen the sense of pride and connection throughout Gardena. I am committed to building on this momentum and continuing to move our city forward.
Where has the current council been successful, and where have they been less so?
The current council has been successful because the majority understand the rules, regulations, and responsibilities that govern how the city operates, particularly when it comes to approving projects while still remaining accountable to the community. Where we can improve is in continuing to broaden our perspective and collaboration. It is important for council members to engage more with neighboring communities, learn from other cities, and build relationships with elected officials outside our area. By sharing ideas, understanding best practices, and learning more about successful processes elsewhere, we can bring even stronger leadership and innovation back to Gardena.
What makes Gardena special?
Gardena is special because, although we are a city of more than 61,000 residents, we still maintain a true small-town feel. People who visit Gardena — especially during our community events — can immediately sense that strong feeling of connection and pride. Our city has a rich history and deep community roots, from proud Gardena High School alumni to local restaurants and family-owned businesses that have been here for generations. Whenever people learn that I’m from Gardena, they often say, “I know someone from Gardena,” “I was born in Gardena,” or “I’ve eaten at a restaurant in Gardena.” That says a lot about the impact and reputation of our city. That’s why my new saying is: “All things lead back to Gardena.”
What would you like to say to the people of Gardena?
To the people of Gardena, I want to thank you for your continued support, trust, and pride in our city. It has been an honor to serve this community, and I remain committed to making Gardena safer, stronger, and more vibrant for everyone. Together, we have accomplished a great deal, and I truly believe our best days are still ahead. I will continue working hard to support our families, seniors, youth, local businesses, and neighborhoods while preserving the unique character that makes Gardena so special. Gardena is more than just a city — it’s a community, a family, and a place people are proud to call home.
