Toxic waste roundup Saturday in Gardena

Those consumers hanging on to toxic and hazardous wastes can finally let go Saturday, Feb. 8, as Hitco Carbon Composite in Gardena will host a Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup. Hours are 9 to 3 p.m. and location is 1551 W. 139th St., Gardena.

This list of accepted waste items is extensive: brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, cleaners with acid or lye, pesticides or herbicides, household batteries and car batteries, pool chemicals, motor oil, oil filters, expired pharmaceuticals, anti-freeze, and fluorescent light bulbs.

Home-generated sharp wastes, including hypodermic needles, pen needles, syringes, lancets and intravenous needles.

Also accepted are, household electronic waste, including computer monitors, computer CPUs, televisions, keyboards, printers and cellular phones.

How to prepare

Consumers are asked to bring the items in a sturdy box, preferably in their original labeled containers; do not mix the items together; there is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip; and consumers should be prepared to leave containers and boxes. They should also remove all other items from their trunk.

Not Accepted

Any waste from businesses, explosives, ammunition and radioactive materials, trash and tires, white goods such as refrigerators, stoves and washing machines, and controlled substances.

Saturday’s waste roundup is for consumers only, not business waste. It is open to L.A. County residents.

This is a County of Los Angeles event and presented by the Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of L.A. County in cooperation with cities, including Gardena.
