A Golden Mural in Gardena

Street artist and muralist Gustavo Zermeno Jr. stands before his near-finished mural of double-gold medalist, skater Alysa Liu, on Sunday in Gardena. Liu is the first American woman to win an individual gold medal in Olympic figure skating since 2002. The wall mural is painted on the south outer wall of a glass company at Crenshaw Boulevard and 156th Street. Zermeno Jr., a Gardena resident, began his art project on Monday, Feb. 23 and it was to be completed on Sunday, March 1.

Artist Gustavo Zermeno Jr. needs a ladder to reach the highest aspects of his mural tribute to gold medalist Alysa Liu. Zermeno Jr., a Gardena resident, chose Liu as his subject, after her thrilling figure-skating performance at the Mila- Cortina Winter Games. The wall art can be admired on the corner of 156th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard. Liu captured gold in both the women’s singles and the team event. She is a student at UCLA.
Zermeno Jr.’s speaks with curious and amazed onlookers on Sunday. He grew up in Venice, Calif. and is a
graduate of Venice High School. His recent mural of Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu started on Monday, Feb.
3 and he finished on Sunday, March 1.
