Briana Johnson scored a game-high 21 points as Serra High's girls' basketball team captured the Southern California Regional Division I championship with a 61-45 overtime win over top seed Ventura last Saturday at the Walter Pyramid on the Long Beach State University campus. After the game was tied at 43 after regulation, the Cavaliers let loose to outscore the Cougars 18-2 in the four-minute overtime period to win handily. Included was overcoming a six-point deficit midway in the fourth quarter before scoring the final six points in regulation, then the first 11 of the overtime period to complete the game with a 24-2 run. Johnson, a junior guard, also had 31 points in Serra's 71-56 regional semi-final win over host Vista Murrieta on March 17. Serra will attempt to win its second California State championship in three seasons as it faces Northern California champion McClatchy for the Division I title Friday or Saturday at UC Berkeley.
