Romero steps down as Gardena High baseball coach

Gardena High baseball coach Robert Romero stepped down shortly after his Panthers lost in the first round of the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division II playoffs to Van Nuys Grant High 14-0 in late May at Gardena High.

Romero’s resignation came after his frustration of his squad being seeded fifth in the Division II playoffs while the Lancers were 12th, but Grant overwhelmed Gardena.

Romero head coached the Panthers for three seasons, replacing Chad Nammack who went on to become athletic director at Playa del Rey St. Bernard High, but he since left that post. It is currently unknown where Nammack, who also was head baseball coach at South Torrance High and El Camino College earlier, is.

Gardena finished 7-9 overall and 2-8 in the Marine League, which was led by champion and L.A. City Section Division I semifinalist Harbor City Narbonne. The Gauchos lost 3-2 to eventual champion Woodland Hills El Camino Real.

Sources are that neither the Panthers nor Serra field a summer baseball team.

Streak ends: For Dodger standout pitcher Zach Greinke, he became a father to a baby boy that forced him to postpone his start against the host New York Mets from last Friday to Sunday at Citi Field.

He came into the game pitching 43 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. He made it two more innings before the Mets broke the streak with no outs in the bottom of the third inning when Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a groundout from pitcher Jacob De Grom.

The Mets added another run in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 lead before the Dodgers came back with two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game.

The Mets, however, scored the winning run on a walk-off base hit from former Dodger Juan Uribe in the bottom of the 10th for a 3-2 victory.

The loss was the second straight for the Dodgers as the San Francisco Giants are within one game of the top spot in the National League Western Division after completing a sweep with Bay area rival Oakland Athletics with a 4-3 win on Sunday at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The Giants have a five-game winning streak and won nine of their last 10 games.

The Dodgers came home for a two-game series with the A’s on Tuesday and Wednesday, then will host their Greater L.A. rivals L.A.-Anaheim Angels on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Clayton Kershaw, meanwhile, has a 29-inning scoreless streak as he looks at an attempt to break the 1988 record of 59 straight innings set by Orel Hershiser.

The Dodgers have the top two consecutive scoreless streak record; Hershiser in 1988 and 58 2/3 straight innings from the late Don Drysdale (1936-93) in 1968. The third all-time longest is 55 set in 1913 by Walter Johnson, who was one of the first standout Major League Baseball standouts hailing from Fullerton.
In the modern era, since 1960, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Bob Gibson has the third longest scoreless string at 47 innings in 1968, the same year that Drysdale did his.

Greinke’s streak is 10th all-time; since 1900.

Special Olympic Prep Teams: With the Special Olympics for intellectual disabled athletes going on in L.A., the CIF-L.A. City Section already is going to have the Special Olympic, which is the AA division, for various sports.

Since the late 1980’s, the L.A. City Section had the “AA” division for track and field. It plans to expand that.

Meanwhile, the CIF-Southern Section should definitely look into the same. It would be great for the kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities to get to compete in sports.

Sources are that some of the Southern Section leagues, including the Long Beach area Moore League, have the “AA” division for some sports.

It is also in some sports in the San Diego Section.
