GVN Athlete of the Week, June 19

Pitcher Kyle Smith pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Torrance High's baseball team to its first CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship by routing Pioneer League cross town rival South Torrance, 11-0, on June 7 at UC Riverside. Smith finished the season with a spectacular earned run average of 0.46. Smith was also the starting pitcher for the winning Red team that downed the Blue stars, 12-3, in the 45th Annual South Bay All-Star Baseball Classic last Friday at El Segundo Recreation Park. Smith resumes his baseball stint at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next season.
