The Lancers all but had the game wrapped up entering the bottom of the seventh inning with an 8-3 lead.

That’s when Serra finally exploded for six runs to pull off a 9-8 victory for its first league victory.

That’s when Serra finally exploded for six runs to pull off a 9-8 victory for its first league victory.

“I was looking for guys to step up,” Serra head coach Wilmer Aaron said. “We hit well but our defense was killing us. The kids are a little panicky. We were able to hold them and it will allow you to win.”

The bottom of the seventh began with singles by Laurington Williams, Brian Sanders and Mateo Brambila that scored Williams. After Daniel Wheeler and Jordan Tilque walked, which allowed Sanders to score cutting La Salle’s lead to 8-6, Tom Bothwell also walked bringing home Brambila getting Serra to within 8-7.

A squeeze bunt from Daniel Perez, then, brought home Wheeler to tie the game. Williams was the 10th batter at the plate and he hit the ball to deep center field to bring home Brambila for the winning run.

Willams had a fine game going 2-for-2 with the RBI and scored once. Brambila went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Perez was also 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

David Laurenti was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Brambila, who was tagged for six runs in the first two innings.

Serra split its first two games in the St. Paul Tournament. Last Saturday at La Mirada High, the Cavaliers fell to the host Matadors 3-1. Serra mustered just two hits in the game.

Last Monday, the Cavaliers had little trouble with Long Beach Cabrillo with a 17-1 rout.

Gary McCoy sparked Serra by going 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and three runs scored. Tyler Morrison had a hit, drove in two runs and scored twice.

The Cavaliers resumed the St. Paul Tournament which lasts through today.

Serra will host defending CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division II champion Dorsey in a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

The Cavaliers are at Alemany in Mission Hills for a Harvard-Westlake Tournament game on April 18 before resuming Del Rey action at St. Paul in Santa Fe Springs on April 21.
