Ruling on Jackson disqualification is unfair

It was a stunner to hear that premiere Serra High long jumper Adoree Jackson was disqualified from the event at the CIF-Southern Section Division IV Prelims on July 17 at Carpinteria High.

It was just for checking his long jumping performance that unbelievably violated a new National High School Sports Federation rule.

How the Federation decided to pass that policy was uncertain. However, I understand it could be because they need to stay for their jumps or that it may keep too many competitors from checking and overcrowding an area. Who knows?

The ruling was among the most bizarre ever heard of.

Sources are, according to Serra head coach Chris Faulknor, that one of Serra’s Del Rey League rivals, La Salle High of Pasadena, was getting petitioning to have Jackson disqualified and it was a success

An appeal failed. Jackson’s attempt to break the national prep record of 26 feet, 10 inches set three years ago has been wiped away.

Jackson already has the best official long jump of 25-5 ¼ he did in winning the Chandler, Ariz. Track and Field Invitational in March.  He also won the event at 25-0 ½ at the highly prestigious Arcadia Invitational on April 12 before a foot injury sidelined him a week later at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational. That event was won by last season’s California State Champion Nathan Moore from Castro Valley with a wind aided mark of 25-10, which is unofficial.

Moore knows that it could be his turn at the attempt of the national record or, at least, the state mark of 26-4 ¾ set in 1989 by Tulare’s James Stallworth.

Jackson’s disqualification of the event, coupled with Serra’s big baton error costing its 4×100-meter relay team to advance to the CIF-Southern Section Division IV meet at the May 7 Del Rey League Championships at Monrovia High, proved to be costly for the Cavaliers, who ended their string of six consecutive Southern Section Division IV titles that was snapped by Westlake Village Oaks Christian, 91 1/2-78 over second place Serra.

Jackson is still going to Friday’s Southern Section Masters Championships at Cerritos College with his Cavalier 4×400-meter relay team that won their race in 3:19.81 as they seek to bring that time down enough for California State contention on June 6 and 7 at Buchanan High in Clovis.

We certainly wish them best of luck at that event before Jackson moves on to University of Southern California to begin his football season this fall, then will join the Trojans’ track and field squad to continue his long jump and sprinting events.

Pacific Lutheran advances by forfeit: There was another rather unusual event at last Friday’s CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs.

Pacific Lutheran High’s baseball team from Gardena won by forfeit over Trona High, due to them not even showing up at the scheduled contest at the Henderson Sports Complex in San Pedro, the Stingrays’ home field.

Trona is a small town located in the high desert region towards Bishop.

Pacific Lutheran visited one of the division’s top teams, Nuview Bridge, last Tuesday in Nuevo seeking to pull off an upset.

Great job, Beckett: Last Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed their Memorial Day Weekend trip to Philadelphia in great fashion.

Josh Beckett hurled the team’s first no-hitter in 18 years against the Phillies as the Dodgers shut them out, 6-0.

It was the Dodgers’ 21st no-hitter in the history of the franchise, which began in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1890, and 11th since moving to L.A. in 1958.

The previous Dodger no-hitter was in 1996 by South Korean sensation Hideo Nomo against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver. That goes back to when Bill Clinton was President of the United States. The National Basketball Association Lakers were still playing at the Forum in Inglewood and the Clippers were at the L.A. Sports Arena. Also, the Kings National Hockey League team was still at the Forum, along with the Lakers.

Kings take 3-1 lead: The Los Angeles Kings NHL team could be headed for another amazing season, just like when they won the Stanley Cup two years ago.

On Memorial Day at the Staples Center, the Kings won their third consecutive game over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, 5-2.

The Kings could have wrapped up the series in Chicago on Wednesday.

The way it is going, we could see the big city NHL Stanley Cup final between the Kings and the New York Rangers. The Rangers are seeking their first final and Stanley Cup championship since 1994 as they took a 3-1 series lead with a 3-2 overtime win over the Montreal Canadians last Sunday.

Each team is one win away from the coast-to-coast championship.

Errors, big inning

costly to Cavaliers

Serra High’s baseball team had things going against host Loara High in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs last Friday in Anaheim.

The Cavaliers held a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning. That was when Serra committed three of their five errors that led to a five-run inning and Loara went on for an 8-5 victory eliminating the defending CIF champion Cavaliers.

Second baseman Hector Ramos had a fine game going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Those runs were on a double that gave Serra, which ended its season at 13-12, a two-run lead.

The Saxons, who improved to 21-9 and played at top seed Palm Desert in the second round last Tuesday, scored five runs, four of those unearned, in the bottom of the inning.

Junior Mateo Brambila also had a fine game going 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and one run scored.

Laurington Williams drove in a run with a double. Morgan Lomax was 2-for-4. Marcus Wilson had a two-run single and scored once.

Freshman losing pitcher Carlos Fernandezees went six innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He struck out two batters, walked one and hit a batter.

Serra outhit Loara, 11-8, despite the loss.
