Serra High guard Chyanne Butler proved to be dominant by combining for 85 points in three games against Bishop Montgomery, St. Bernard and Palisades last week.

At Bishop Montgomery on Jan. 28, Butler, a senior transfer from St. Bernard, led the Lady Cavaliers with 32 points as the Cavaliers dominated the Knights, 72-53, in a key showdown.

Last Thursday, Butler had 35 points, five rebounds, six steals and five assists as Serra was able to overcome a 38-point performance by Demoria White for a 71-50 win.

In a non-league against Palisades last Saturday, Butler added 20 more points as the host Cavaliers topped the Dolphins, 54-45.

Perhaps the biggest win for Serra was over second place Bishop Montgomery, which has played very well lately. Butler dominated the Knights with 20 first half points.

Caila Hailey added 18 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. She had two three-point baskets.

The Cavaliers started fast in taking a 12-2 lead and led by as many as 19 points, before the Knights got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter.

From there, Serra put the game away.

Janelle Odionu led Bishop Montgomery with 19 points. Chelsea Lidy put in 18 points, while Christina Delapina tallied 11.

“We played a very good game against Bishop Montgomery,” Serra head coach McKenzie Hadley said. “Our singular players had a big game.”

Last Thursday, the Cavaliers were expected to have it easy against a once proud St. Bernard squad that lost premiere head coach Bo Corona (now at Lawndale Leuzinger) but they had trouble stopping senior guard Demoria White, one of the few holdovers from last season’s CIF-Southern Section Division IVAA semifinalists and Southern California Regional Division IV finalists who are rebuilding under first year head mentor Michelle Greco. White totaled a game-high 38 points and helped the Vikings to a 23-23 halftime tie.

Despite White’s outstanding performance, Serra’s depth, behind Butler’s 35 points, proved to be better than St. Bernard, which had just two other players score. That included another returning player, Chenne Pelle, with 10 points and KJen Jonae Wallick with two.

Serra also had 13 points by Nautica Morrow and seven from Caila Hailey. The Cavaliers outscored the Vikings, 48-27, in the second half.

“White had a great game,” Hadley commented. “She’s a great player. We had a very good defense, holding St. Bernard to just three players scoring.”

Butler had 20 points, five rebounds and four steals in Serra’s win over Palisades on Saturday.

Hailey tallied 13 points and seven assists and Kayla Bibb hauled down 11 rebounds.

The Cavaliers are 20-2 overall.

Serra hosts Bishop Amat from La Puente in a league game tonight at 7 p.m. before traveling to La Salle in Pasadena for another 7 p.m. Del Rey contest next Tuesday at the same time. Serra, then, hosts Bishop Montgomery in the league showdown finale next Thursday at 5 p.m.
