With large number of qualifiers, Serra seeks Division IV sweep

Serra High’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams did extremely well with a majority of their CIF-Southern Section Division IV entries in last Saturday’s Prelims at Carpinteria High advancing to this Saturday’s fi nal at Moorpark High. As expected, the Cavaliers proved dominant in the sprinting events. Premiere junior Roderick Pleasant had the meet’s top times of 10.58 and 21.16 seconds in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, in order. In the 200, junior Deven Lewis had the meet’s second best overall time at 22.01. Jaylin Franklin advanced in the 100 and 200 clocking 10.99 for a seven overall finish in the 100 and 22.3 for sixth in the 200. Lewis also made the finals in the 400, placing second in 49.23. Teammate Elijah Flores made the cut after a seventh-place finish timing 50.95. The Cavaliers also had top times in their 4×100 and 4×400 relay squads in 41.41 and 3:27.46, respectively. Runners on Serra’s 400 relay included Jamar Bell, Darrian Anderson, Cordell Montgomery and Lewis. Pleasant did not run on the relay but could in the championship meet. Included in the 1,600 team are Dakoda Fields, Flores, Montgomery and Lewis. Serra also has three long jumpers make the finals in second place Fields (21 feet, one inch), fourth place Franklin (20-8) and sixth place Jamar BellGonzalez (20-7.25). Otis Harrison, Jr. advanced in the 300 hurdles, finishing fifth overall clocking 41.7. In the girls’ division, Serra enjoyed a one-two-three overall finish at the 100 and one-two in the 200. Jordan Washington and Brazil Neal had the top two finishes in the 100 and 200. Washington won the 100 at 12.06, followed by Neal (12.1). In the 200, Washington won clocking 24.68 and Brazil (24.95) was second. In the 100, Mia Flowers finished third overall in 12.21. Sienna Claiborne advanced in the 400 (fourth, 57.87) and 300 hurdles (seventh, 49.05). Serra’s girls also had a strong showing in the 800 and 1,600 meters. The Cavaliers, who swept the top two spots in the 800 at the Del Rey League Championships on April 27 at Serra, had Courtney Sanco advance after finishing third overall timing 2:20.81 and teammate Juanita Parr taking seventh in 2:22.64. Sanco also advanced in the 1,600 after an eighth-place clocking 5:23.03. The Cavaliers also took top spots in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Serra’s 400 relay squad of Jaiya Fletcher, Mia Flores, Neal and Washington won at 46.98 and the 1,600 team including Parr, Sanco, Neal and Washington had the meet’s best time of 3:59.5. Serra had two long jump qualifiers in freshman Zoe Tramble (seventh, 16-4) and junior Zakiyah Wilson (eighth, 16-2.5). The divisional championships begin with the field events at `11 a.m. and the running events at 1 p.m. at Moorpark High. Top finishers from the four combined divisions move on to the Southern Section Masters Championships beginning at 5 p.m. on May 20, also at Moorpark. The CIF-State Championships will return to Buchanan High in Clovis on May 27-28.
